Since the 1990s, pioneering Glitch Artist jonCates works across digital forms from Internet to cinema, games and NFTs. Most recently he is known for creating the Glitch Western genre. "Glitch Western" is a form of Digital Art that combines Old West themes with frontier technologies, such as AI, expressing their glitches and errors. His extensive international exhibition record includes invited exhibitions at biennales, museums, galleries, film festivals, and alternative arts spaces such as: 鳳甲美術館 (Hong-Gah Museum), 臺北數位藝術中心 (Digital Art Center), and 剝皮寮歷史街區 Bopiliao Historic Block (Taipei, Taiwan); Museum of Contemporary Art, the Gene Siskel Film Center, Chicago Gamespace, and the original Glitch Festivals (Chicago, USA); as well as ART BASEL (Miami, Florida), MuseumsQuartier (Vienna, Austria), Instituto Cultural de León (Mexico), Kasseler Kunstverein (Kassel, Germany), and the Ende Tymes Festival (New York City, New York) and many more worldwide.
Founder of the Glitch Art Gallery, jonCates curates Digital Art for international venues and organizations as an invited curator for Superchief Gallery, Ars Electronica Festival, and The University of Illinois at Chicago as well as many others worldwide. His acclaimed Chicago New Media exhibition, a major survey of Art and Games that he curated in 2018, was supported by The Terra Foundation for American Art, The United States Embassy (Austria), The Goethe-Institut, and more. His curating has always activated both physical spaces and digital networks simultaneously since 1997.
Cates is recognized for early and ongoing contributions to Digital Art education. Now offering classes through his glitch.school initiative he most recently partnered with 藝術宮 Artgong at the 龍山文創基地 Longshan Cultural & Creative Base, 臺北數位藝術節 (Digital Arts Festival Taipei), Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB), National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), and the Center for Innovation Taipei.
